Cheyenne’s original employer, Union Pacific, remains the city’s largest private employer with roughly 800 workers. F.E. Warren Air Force Base with over 4,200 military and civilian employees, is the leading employer for the area. The Federal Government employs over 3,000 people in Cheyenne and the state of Wyoming has a similar number employed there.
Laramie County School District and United Medical Center are major employers along with refineries, hotels, nursing homes, light industrial and telecommunications companies. Farming, mining and agricultural jobs continue to support some jobs in Cheyenne, and construction, trade and transportation also employ a significant number of people. The unemployment rate in Cheyenne hovers around 3.7%
